LernerMedia book cited as Outstanding Academic Title, 2008
We are proud to announce that Infectious Diseases: In Context (Brenda Wilmoth Lerner, K. Lee Lerner, eds.) created for Gale (a division of Cengage Learning) was named an Outstanding Academic Title for 2008 by the American Library Association. As editors, Brenda and I are grateful to the truly global group of scholars, researchers, and writers who contributed to Infectious Diseases. We owe special thanks to highly respected advisors and authors Stephen A. Berger, M.D., in Tel Aviv, Anna Marie Roos, Ph.D, at Oxford, Constance K. Stein, Ph.D., at SUNY, and to Jack Woodall, Ph.D. A co-founder of ProMED and recognized as one of the world’s leading epidemiologists and international scientists, Dr. Woodall’s writing provided both expert insight and compelling reading.
We also wish to thank copyeditors Christine Jeryan, Kate Kretchmann, and Alicia Cafferty Lerner, whose keen eyes and sound judgments greatly enhanced the quality and readability of the text. We also wish to thank Marcia Schiff at the Associated Press (AP) for her help in securing archival images.
We offer deep and sincere thanks to the talented editors and specialists at Gale who commissioned and assisted in the preparation of IDIC.
The 2008 awards list is published in January issue of Choice magazine, published by the American Library Association. This prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extraordinary recognition of the academic library community.

Note: This post was originally published 3 January, 2008. Until I learn to do it correctly, in order to keep it a as “sticky” and a “header” on our front page, I am forced to continually revise the posting date.
Between real work, I’m learning as fast as I can, but I hope to bring in a blogging pro very soon!

Is this the book you worked with MSF?

I give a big nod here to Brenda — it was really her book. I wrote the intro, sidebars, frontmatter, and backmatter, and contributed to some molecular biology/science sections and wrote the intro (that’s what I was doing in Dublin the week before Lee & Alicia’s wedding) — but Brenda put about 50,000 words into the book and edited every single entry. It is quite fitting her name appears first on the cover.
I hope this spurs her to go back to med school at the Sorbonne and achieve her life long dream fo transforming her R.N. into an M.D. with a specialty in epidemiology. It’s always been our goal to go off an die of some mysterious illness somewhere on an MSF mission. It sure makes retirement planning a lot simpler.
My dream is, of course, to sit and write fiction or move scripts on a bench beside the Boules court in the nearby Jardin du Luxembourg eating my crusty baguette while waiting to walk Brenda home from class.

… I keep telling you all that Brenda is far far far better half of Lerner and Lerner. She proves it once again!

You two have created some wonderful books over the years, but this is definitely one of your best.

Hi Madeline,
IDIC is YOUR book too (Madeline was the Publisher’s Project Manager)! Your skill and boundless energy (aka “springy legs”) in resolving production issues greatly contributed to the quality of IDIC. Your sense of humor was especially helpful during the slog to finish the backmatter when we had to hop from projects in India and Italy and then to Dublin for our son’s wedding. You kept us sane and on task! Good on you too! — Cheers, Lee

Hi Lee:
That is great news. Glad to know I played a very small part in such an acclaimed book. Kudos to Brenda for all her efforts
Cheers,
Anna Marie
